LOCAL PEOPLE TO HOLD
CANDLELIGHT VIGIL, Sunday, 3/16/2003
Broad Street Green Wethersfield, 7:00p

A Worldwide Wave of Vigils to
Oppose Preemptive US Invasion of Iraq
In Over 3000 Cities in Over 90 Countries

Local citizens will hold a candlelight vigil on the eve of an anticipated UN Security Council vote. Local organizations such as Wethersfield Peace and Justice have responded to a call by Win Without War, the nation’s mainstream, anti-war-in-Irag coalition. We are joined by its million-member affiliate MoveOn.org with citizens of over 90 countries in over 3000 cities around the world.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa has added his voice to the global call yesterday:

"On Sunday evening people in every corner of the globe will shine beacons of light throughout the world. May our candles rekindle the light of reason and hope so that war will be averted in Iraq and peace will prevail in the world."

Many faith-based organizations in the US and abroad have responded with an unprecedented set of protest vigils set to begin in New Zealand on Sunday night and to continue sequentially in time zones all around the world.

Shielding Peace Candle

1. Call to the Vigil: Waiting for others to arrive, Patty Sullivan, Wethersfield, displays this evening's announcement by the light of a trinity of candles. Sullivan is a founder of and is speaker for Wethersfield Peace & Justice which urges US pursuit of international diplomacy, not a heavy handed, essentially one-sided rush to war.

2. WWII Veteran for Peace: 'Been there done that' veteran George A. Ruhe of Wethersfield, 77, displays evidence of his loyalty, commitment, and honorable service to his country. Saved for over 50 years, his badges dispute those who would question his patriotism as he advocates against the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

3. Meg's Angel Lantern: Meg Barstow, another WP&J founder with her husband Dr. Robbins Barstow, finds her way with the light of an angel-adorned lantern. Though the sands of time have impaired her gait, Meg willingly risked personal injury on the Broad Street Green, still blanketed by snow and ice.

4. Shielding Peace Candle: The winds of war kept trying to extinguish the light of peace, here shielded by a peace advocate's cupped hand. As the vigil progressed, the winds seemed to die down, at least for a while.

Moonlight for Peace

1. Family at Peace: Recent newcomers to Wethersfield, Jen and John Shafer with their daughter invest their family's support in this peace rally. Umbrella in hand, they had also participated in the WP&J's first [walk for peace] a couple weeks earlier.

2. Cups of Light for Peace: Patty Sullivan (L-R) addressed the group on the Green emphasizing why she was here and explaining the tension within her own extended family: her own peace activism, questions of peace -v- war, a father who is a USAF veteran, and a son who will serve if called. Another peace supporter, "Walt" held two candles and firm beliefs that peaceful solutions had not yet been exhausted.

3. Circle of Light: Thoughts, words and songs of peace were shared among the ring of forty-five during the next hour. A lone, drive-by, war supporter shouted his disagreement during this time.

4. Moonlight for Peace: In the light of a nearly full moon, the participants in the vigil stand out before the silhouettes of the unclad winter trees of the Broad Street Green. The home of 9/11 victim Richard Keane is in the background (R). His wife Judy has advocated for peaceful responses to 9/11. Through the Keane Foundation's positive initiatives, the citizens of Wethersfield will benefit.

.

1. Together for Peace: Before disbanding for the evening, some agreed to return here each week to promote peace. Selected images of this evening's contribution to the worldwide candlelight vigil for peace were submitted to MoveOn.Org. Among the thousands submitted worldwide, one of these images, was chosen to join hundreds others for internet publication at the MoveOn.Org site: WWII Veteran for Peace.
