In excess of 1600 doctors from all corners of the State of Connecticut, rallied in Hartford at the Capitol on a balmy, early spring day to reaffirm their belief that vital changes and legislation were needed urgently to curtail unrestrained, non-economic jury awards in malpractice trials. Following registration and a bag lunch at the Bushnell - Belding Theatre, a 90 minute lecture was held in the Belding auditorium. The overflow from this 907 seat theatre filled the corridors, the lobby, the stairways. Even this was insufficient to accommodate growing numbers which resigned themselves to the warmth and sunshine outdoors. Around 12:45, the lab-coated throng walked up Capitol Avenue to the central walk of the Capitol and around it to the northern side where the rally continued. Before Governor John Rowland had a chance to address the doctors, he was presented with an honorary, white lab coat embroidered with his name and title. He emphasized his committment to the passage of the legislation which the doctors sought.
