"Salute to Seniors Week"

Their Special Seniors
"Salute to Seniors Proclamation
Chairperson Morin announced that the week of May 10, 2004 has been proclaimed as Salute to Seniors Week in Wethersfield. In order to facilitate increased interaction between the youth and senior citizens of Wethersfield, the Silas Deane Parent Action Committee, the Student Council, and the Social & Youth Services Department are co-sponsoring programs linking students with the senior citizen population.
Presentations from SDMS Students – Special Seniors
Mary Ann Shinn, home school liaison for Social & Youth Services, introduced staff members from the Silas Deane Middle School and Board of Education, chairperson of the intergenerational event, and the SDMS PAC chairpersons. Ms. Shinn said that the purpose of the program is to build bridges of understanding between generations, to honor the Senior Citizens, and to show respect for their contributions to both family and community. Ms. Shinn introduced Joanne Huffman who congratulated students whose essays on an important senior citizen in their life were chosen as the top five. She said that it was a very tough choice as all of the essays were well written. Celina Rogers wrote about Dorothy Alsop, her grandmother. Mike Ciampi wrote about his grandmother Vincenza Simeone Ciampi. Pawel Burek read about his teacher Mrs. Cheryl Chadsey. Chris Thibeault read about his grandfather, Jim Keenan. Sunny Long read about his grandfather Shin Shulon who lives in Beijing China."
